New Year’s Eve in a small town.
This year our friend Natalia invited our community to stay at her family’s home in their small town about 100 km north of Seville. Samuel and Josiah went with Bailey’s by car, and I joined the rest of the group to arrive by bus.
It was a beautiful – though winding – ride. I love seeing the landscape of Spain, it always reminds me of different places in the U.S. that would take days to get to driving from my own home.
On this trip we left the flat city of Seville and headed toward the steep and rolling hills of the Sierra Norte. We encountered deep red soil and huge boulders sitting precariously on hilltops. My first glimpse of the town was as we came around a bend and I could see it emerge in the distance between hills. All white, very charming. The town itself was small, about 5000 residents.
Natalia told me that the family home had been in the family for over three centuries! Her grandfather and uncle lived above them.
It was a nice trip, neat to spend time in a small Spanish town in an old Spanish house. It was also a bit exhausting with Josiah as it was not baby-proof!
The families ended up staying in a hostal near by. It was simple and nice, and had very little Josiah could “get into,” so we were able to let him loose in there. He did really well sleeping in a big bed next to us. (We pushed three twin beds together).
Fireworks is a big tradition on New Year’s Eve here. It seemed that trash cans were a popular place to set them off, and we heard these mini explosions until about 4 a.m. At least, that’s when I was finally able to fall asleep!
Check out the gallery for new pictures. I added more to “Josiah in December,” and started a new one – “January 2007.”
happy new year!
