Josiah in The Hospital – III
When I returned to the hospital we were able to talk to a couple of doctors whom we had asked to see (apparently it’s routine to see them only in the morning) – we hadn’t heard any results from the tests that had been done 7 hours earlier. I’m so glad we asked for them, as it turned out Josiah’s protein level was very low (he’s losing protein through the burn site) and that was the cause of the edema and severe enough that he needed to be transferred to ICU.
It was heartbreaking to have him taken from us, we can only visit three times a day for 30 minutes; but it is good that he will have constant monitoring. The ICU doctor was very kind and explained things to us. Josiah also has very low platelets because of the infection and if they continue to drop he may need a transfusion.
I asked about a feeding tube and the doctor agreed that would be a good thing, and depending on how he did last night they may place one today.
We were able to visit him for only 10 min. yesterday evening. He was sedated, with many tubes and wires and restraints. He couldn’t respond to us, but I was glad to see him so calm and hopefully pain free for the first time in four days. The doctor said his condition “is not grave, but I do not know the future; there could be more complications.”
We’ve been reassured by several people that this is the best hospital in AndalucÃa, including the best Children’s hospital, so we are trying to rest assured of that.
We’ve had about six hours of sleep and now we’re headed back to see him again.
