Rooftop Gardener
Something inspired me awhile ago to plant some vegetables. I grew up with lots of land, a mother who loves to garden and a view of farmland as far as the eye could see.
I miss all those things living in the city. But I decided that the absence of land wasn’t going to stop me! We have a huge, open roof above us where we and some of our neighbors hang our laundry and where we store our bikes. What wasted space there is that could be used for planting living things! So, I decided to do just that.
My “garden” started on my window sill with tomatoes and red pepper from seeds I bought at the local garden shop. The tomatoes sprouted much sooner than I thought and I ended up with about twenty good plants. There was no way I’d be able to care for that many, so I started giving them away to friends who had sunny spots.
The peppers were much slower to start, and I only ended up with about five plants (though I still have LOTS of seeds).
Here they are on March 30, when I transplanted most of them into bigger pots, or gave them away.
Here they are three weeks later on April 21 . . . after the advice of our next door neighbor Isadora, (a very kind, elderly woman who has taken great interest in Josiah and our little garden) to move them to the floor of the roof so they wouldn’t be knocked off the ledge by the wind.
Isadora was concerned about the pigeons eating the flowers off the plants (I’ve never seen a pigeon on the roof, and certainly not near the plants. . . ) and advised us to attach cut-up grocery bags to the wall to scare them away. I couldn’t figure out how to do that, so we tied them to meat skewers and stuck them in the pots. Josiah enjoys tending “Mommies potato plants,” too.
More updates to come. . .!

Love the garden! I had intended to send you a packet of snapdragons along with the items sent from our group. However, Denise was absent the day I brought them and they ended up in someone’s car with a few other things that never got sent. Sorry.
