Bienvenidos a Madrid!
We arrived this morning and were greeted at the airport by April. She helped us get a taxi, and somehow we arranged to get 3 large suitcases, a guitar, a small suitcase, 2 computer bags and 3 people in the car with the driver. We almost had to split up, which would have been very difficult considering our exhaustion and how difficult it would have been for either of us to navigate our way without April.
We went for a walk to the mercado this morning to buy some fruit. It is just down the street and is like an indoor Farmers Market.
After a nap, April and I took a long walk around the city and had lunch. I had Paella – it wasn’t great, I mainly ate the rice and left the tentacles alone. I’ve read that people rave about the Paella. I won’t discount it altogether yet – it’s probably like lasagne – some good, some not so good. We walked by the Palacio Real (Royal Palace) where the King does not live, actually; and past the monument to Cervantes, and many other other beautiful buildings and parks. Madrid is so beautiful!
April leaves for the Netherlands on Friday morning to meet up with her husband, Kelly. They will be there until August 16. She plans to show us around and get us aquainted with the neighborhood and metro system tomorrow. We may also go to the suburbs to the home of one of the couples from the church – they live in a housing complex that has a pool!! (Wow, that sounds good!) The weather site says its 99 degrees, though the signs around the city say 40 – 44, which is 107 – 112 in farenheit! It is HOT!
