The World Is My Neighbor
I started my “Spanish for Immigrants†class this week.
There are 19 students in the class from all over the world. Yesterday the class was very conversational and we were able to learn a little bit about one another.
I learned that there is a man from Iran, two women from Morocco and a woman from Algeria, all of whom are Muslim. There are also students from Germany, France, Brazil, Italy, Czech Republic, Romania, and Finland – some of whom voiced that they have no particular religious faith.
As I sat with my fellow classmates, I thought about how different we are in some ways; and yet, how similar. We are all foreigners in this country. We are all struggling to communicate; we have all left our homes to seek something in Spain; and we all hold preconceived ideas about one another and one another’s countries simply because we have never known anyone from some of the places represented.
I realized that these people are my neighbors; and of the twenty people in the classroom, twelve countries were represented. In a sense, this group represents the world. We are all ambassadors of our countries and our faiths.
I have “gone into all the world†just by stepping into that classroom. I hope that I will be a good ambassador.
