TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
Two more days left of TEFL class. It has been an interesting experience to be back in school again. A lot of this stuff seems familiar – like something I learned once upon a time in Junior high. Some of it, however, is brand new. Does anyone other than an English major know what a “phrasal verb†or “conditional 3 sentence†or a modal are? These were all new terms to me. Yet somehow I felt like I was supposed to just know not only how, but also why I speak the way I do. I’ve also learned that despite my best efforts and repeated drilling by my parents and grandparents, I don’t always have perfect speech.
So supposedly, 48 hours from now I should be ready and equipped to go teach English to the President of the Bank of Spain or the CEO of Volkswagen. I don’t feel ready. Will I ever? I feel so inadequate to do this, though our teachers are reassuring. I know I felt like this when I entered the nursing field – and for several years after that; and I was inadequate, but I had to learn somehow.
I hope that on my first day, no one asks me to explain why we make our beds but do the wash.
